Why did crossbreeding become taboo in pedigree dogs?

There is an increased awareness among most geneticists and a growing number of dog breeders in different breeds that several breeds as well as subpopulations in different breeds are becoming increasingly inbred. The issue was on the agenda when The Kennel Club was hosting the 4:th International Dog Health Workshop at Windsor in the beginning of June. The enclosed article, being presented as prereading material for the conference, describes why and how the world of purebred dogs became such a rigid society during the end of the previous century and why the current order must change.
